Enhancing Argumentative Writing Skills: Groundbreaking Study Published in the Journal of Educational Computing Research

The study, titled “Crafting Compelling Argumentative Writing for Undergraduates: Exploring the Nexus of Digital Annotations, Conversational Agents, and Collaborative Concept Maps”.
Addressing Critical Writing Challenges
Argumentative writing is essential for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, students often struggle with unclear and illogical ideas, poorly structured arguments, and unbalanced interpretations of issues, data, and evidence. This study aims to address these challenges by integrating computer-supported tools such as digital annotations, conversational agents (CAs), and collaborative concept maps into an online learning management system.
Research Methodology and Findings
Conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the study involved sixty undergraduate students divided into an experimental group (N=30) and a control group (N=30). The findings revealed that the experimental group’s writing achievements significantly outperformed those of the control group. The use of digital annotations, CAs, and collaborative concept maps effectively enhanced the five key elements of argumentative writing: claims, grounds, warrants, backings, and rebuttals.
A deeper analysis showed that the number of annotations, valid responses from CAs, and argument nodes on collaborative concept maps significantly predicted students’ argumentative writing development. Students also perceived these tools as highly effective in improving their writing skills.
